Technical delivery & service improvement
Service transition, operational readiness, ITSM and ITAM, plus making sure changes work beyond go-live.
I’m Matt Carey. I solve technical problems, build useful software and turn interesting ideas into real things.
OPEN TO SUITABLE CONTRACT & PROJECT WORK
My interest in technology began in the 1990s, long before my career in enterprise IT. I’ve always enjoyed understanding how things work and finding practical ways to make them better.
After early work with Mac networks, databases and web and news systems, I went on to spend over 17 years with Leicestershire Police, progressing from technical support into service management, delivery and identity and access management. I left in August 2025 to focus on my own businesses and return to more hands-on technical work.
Today, I bring that experience into software development, automation and digital transformation through MDC Internet Solutions, while BigYawn Media gives me room to explore games, publishing, 3D design and other creative ideas.
MORE ABOUT MY BACKGROUND ↗Enterprise IT experience combined with an interest in building and improving systems myself. I work best where an operational problem needs a practical technical solution.
Service transition, operational readiness, ITSM and ITAM, plus making sure changes work beyond go-live.
Building practical web tools and applications, including static front ends and database-backed products.
Reducing unnecessary manual work and connecting services using APIs, workflows and purpose-built tooling.
Practical experience delivering identity and access management solutions across enterprise environments.

Technology has been a recurring part of my working life since the early days of the public internet, even when my job title had nothing to do with IT.
In the 1990s, I studied IT through NVQs and found myself looking after a network of old Macs running System 7.5.3 and making changes to a FileMaker database while working as a receptionist for a local voluntary organisation.
My next job was with UK Plus, a UK-focused search engine, where I worked as a web surfer, finding useful and interesting websites for review on its curated platform. I was also involved in ensuring news from around the country could be ingested into a system used by journalists, which often meant getting into the code and adapting it to the requirements of different sources.
After spending some time outside IT, I worked at Maplin, helping customers find the right electronic components and solve practical problems, before returning to Leicester and joining Leicestershire Police in 2008. Looking back, the common thread has always been the same: understanding a problem, learning what is needed and finding a way to make something work.
From early internet work to enterprise systems and independent projects, the common thread has been practical problem-solving and a willingness to learn.
July 2008 — August 2025
Starting in technical support, I progressed through application support, service desk leadership, service transition and service delivery. My work covered frontline technology, enterprise platforms, operational readiness and the processes needed to keep services working reliably.
Alongside service management, I became heavily involved in identity and access management, enterprise tooling and the practical delivery of technology into live service.
Designed and delivered IT Service Management and IT Asset Management tooling for the force, bringing together service processes, asset information and the operational requirements of a complex IT environment.
Led the force’s onboarding of its IAM tool for use across multiple systems and acted as the force’s IAM subject-matter expert. The work involved SailPoint, Microsoft identity and collaboration technologies, and bespoke applications.

Two practical books that bring together my interest in process improvement, automation and making everyday work run more effectively. Written from the perspective of someone who has spent years working with real systems and operational challenges.

Stop Wasting Time on Manual Work and Fix How Your Business Actually Runs
A practical guide to identifying repetitive work, improving workflows and using automation to make everyday operations more effective. The focus is on understanding the work first, then choosing technology that genuinely helps.

A Practical Guide to Finding and Fixing Operational Friction
A guide to recognising the friction that slows organisations down and finding practical ways to improve how work gets done. It explores the problems behind the process rather than assuming every challenge needs a complicated solution.

VISIT MDC ↗Original ideas across games, publishing, digital products and 3D design. A home for the projects that don't fit neatly into one box.
EXPLORE BIGYAWN ↗Some ideas start because there’s a problem to solve. Others start because I wonder what would happen if I tried something different.
I enjoy the balance between structured technical work and creative projects, whether that means developing a game, experimenting with 3D printing or turning a rough idea into a working prototype. I’m rarely short of things I’d like to build; deciding which ones deserve the time is usually the harder part.
That mix of disciplines keeps me learning, and often gives me a different perspective when I return to the more conventional IT problems.
I’m open to suitable short-term, contract and project-based IT work, particularly where I can combine service management experience with hands-on technical delivery, automation or development.
Whether you have a project to discuss, an opportunity that might be a good fit or simply want to connect, I’d be happy to hear from you.
